American express started in 1850 as the express mail business in Buffalo in New York. It was owned by Henry wells, John warren butter field and William Fargo and was established as the joint stock company. In 1852 same founders began Wells Fargo and company in 1852. This happened when Butterfield and others objected to a proposal. The proposal was to extend operations of the company to California. It established the headquarters in a building in Jay Street and Hudson street, later known as Tribeca of Manhattan. It enjoyed a monopoly in shipments of goods, securities, currency and many more. They enjoyed monopoly all through New York State. In 1874 it transfers its headquarters to 65 Broadway and became the financial district of Manhattan.
