The task of electrical wiring and handling of equipments is a job that can be carried out by trained professionals of the trade. The professionals who are trained to carry out these tasks are known as electricians. There are two specific categories of tasks that these professionals carry out: One is for installing new electrical components and the other is for the maintenance of existing electrical infrastructure.
People often feel that electrician and electrical contractor is both the same thing, but one must know that though they are related, they are not the same. The tradesperson who works as an individual is known as an electrician, but an electrical contractor is a businessperson or a firm who employs electricians or professionals to see the job through. An electrical contractor employs support professionals to carry various jobs like design, install and maintain electrical systems. Though both the trades of an electrician and electrical contractor are related but still they require different licenses to carry out electrical jobs in various parts across United States.

In United States, electricians are generally known by the name of Inside wireman. In case of a wiring fault in a building, it is the construction electricians who look after the problem and solve it. The other related professionals are marine electricians, research electricians and hospital electrician. The stage lighting electricians is involved in the task of installing and focusing of stage lighting, at the same time operates them during a show. The job of an electrician falls under the category of regulated trade in almost all the countries around the world.
