The task of electrical wiring and handling of equipments is a job that can be carried out by trained professionals of the trade. The professionals who are trained to carry out these tasks are known as electricians. There are two specific categories of tasks that these professionals carry out: One is for installing new electrical components and the other is for the maintenance of existing electrical infrastructure.
People often feel that electrician and electrical contractor is both the same thing, but one must know that though they are related, they are not the same. The tradesperson who works as an individual is known as an electrician, but an electrical contractor is a businessperson or a firm who employs electricians or professionals to see the job through. An electrical contractor employs support professionals to carry various jobs like design, install and maintain electrical systems. Though both the trades of an electrician and electrical contractor are related but still they require different licenses to carry out electrical jobs in various parts across United States.

In United States, electricians are generally known by the name of Inside wireman. The electrical professionals, recruited by an electric utility company, who work at the high voltage distribution systems, are known as Outside Lineman. In the United States the electrical contracting is divided into 4 distinct categories and is as follows: Commercial wiring, residential wiring, Industrial wiring and light industrial wiring. The electrical service providers perform the job of Implementing, troubleshooting and solving wiring problems, as and when needed. In case of a wiring fault in a building, it is the construction electricians who look after the problem and solve it. The other related professionals are marine electricians, research electricians and hospital electrician. There are various American and overseas companies who recruit apprentice in their companies for the purpose of on job training.
Other than the jobs that are mentioned above, an electrician also handles stage lighting as a part of a stagecraft. The stage lighting electricians is involved in the task of installing and focusing of stage lighting, at the same time operates them during a show. It is very important to know that the stage electricians require skills that are very different from that of a construction electrician. The stage electricians generally work and handle lighting and electrical equipments that are specifically used in a stage.
The job of an electrician falls under the category of regulated trade in almost all the countries around the world. This is for the simple reason that it is the hazardous work of electricity that they handle. For this reason the safety regulations becomes even more binding. It is usually the government or professional societies who have the authority of issuing licenses to an electrician.
