The Charlottetown Guardian: The Number One Newspaper for Prince Edward Islanders
PEI, or Prince Edward Island, is the smallest of the Canadian provinces. With less than 140,000 residents it is also ranked 10th in population of Canadian provinces and territories. However, as little as PEI is, their provincial newspaper makes up for it in readership.
The Charlottetown Guardian, or commonly known as the Guardian to residents, is the leading newspaper for the province. Launched in 1870 as The Presbyterian, it became known as the Charlottetown Guardian in 1887 and has stayed the same ever since. Small time newspaper’s, as you will soon see, don’t get any bigger than The Guardian.
A History Lesson in the Charlottetown Guardian The Guardian has gone through quite a list of successful owners including the Thomson Corporation, Southam Newspapers and Canwest Global. It has had its ups and downs but remains a successful magazine to this day.
It was originally run by Presbyterian minister, Stephan G Lawson back in 1870. With little success and out of luck Lawson gave his paper to Rev. William R France in 1887. He changed the paper’s name and started to see results. In 1891 the paper was changed from a weekly paper to a daily one and, during the next few decades was passed on to various owners.
In 1923 a fire burned The Guardian Plant but that couldn’t keep the newspaper down. It moved to its present location on Prince Street in 1956. The Thompson Company took over ownership in the 1950’s before giving it up to Southam Inc in 1996. From there the paper moved to Hollinger Company before being brought by Canwest Global Communication in 2000 and then Transcontinental Media in 2002.
Transcontinental Media Group currently owns the newspaper. Transcontinental Media Group is one of the leading North American printing firms with success in magazine publishing and newspapers. The Charlottetown Guardian is only one of their many successful print publications to their name.
Your Daily Dose of Prince Edward Island The Guardian is published daily and features sports, news, entertainment, lifestyle, business, court, politics, editorials and several columns by esteemed writers. The newspaper is smart and sophisticated with a dash of humour when appropriate. Many PEI residents consider The Guardian as their modern day Bible.
For those living in Charlottetown and surrounding areas, it’s the best way to keep up on the local news around them and stay connected to the world. The magazine also has an online edition for those who prefer to be paperless.
Islanders Love their Guardian The Guardian ranks number 44 on the list of most popular Canadian magazines according to readership. However, with 123,000 people reading the Guardian and a population of only 139,000 it would suggest that almost everyone in PEI gets their daily dose of their local news.
While other newspapers, such as the Toronto Star, The Vancouver Sun, and The Globe and Mail may have a larger readership, the Guardian is one of the most-read local magazines with an impressive cult following.

What Is Chronic Stress? Basically, chronic stress is when your job has become so stressful that it is a constant in your life. If you go to work every day dreading the entire day ahead of you; if you can’t seem to get your mind off of work and it is starting to affect your life outside of work, then it is a pretty good indicator that you have chronic stress. Unfortunately, this can cause depression and burnout, and can actually be deadly. Stress is never good on your body, especially the heart, yet too many of us are living and working in jobs that are entirely too stressful for our systems to handle. At some point, something will have to give, and it just may be your body.

Choosing your Texas Electricity Provider No one wants to spend a fortune on electricity bills. Luckily, in Texas, it’s possible to choose your electricity provider based on rates. The Texas deregulation system allows you to choose your Retail Electric Provider so you can shop around and save. This system works by allowing the people to choose who they receive electricity from, but local wires still maintain and regulate the power lines. Therefore, there are no problems when you switch providers. Almost 40 percent of people in deregulated areas have taken advantage of this choice and switched service providers at least one. A census tells about the population, demographics, occupational data, literacy rate, male to female ratio, religions, ethnic groups, languages and several other factors. By understanding the information acquired by the census, we are able to understand the United States of America as a whole.
